My Non-New Year's Resolutions

Happy Non-New Year everyone!

It might be because the Jewish New Year just passed. It might be because I just signed a lease on my apartment for another year. It might be because my birthday was last month. It might be because I'm just bored. Regardless of the reason, sometimes you just feel like you need to make some changes. Typically, people make resolutions heading into the new year with the belief that this is their year and this year, BIG things will happen. Well, I think that's BS. Most people make New Year's Resolutions and never stick to them. The reason? They're not motivated. We all have things we'd like to change about ourselves, so the concept of resolutions makes sense, but I truly believe that if you're going to make resolutions, the only way you're ever going to work at it is if there's something in your gut telling you that change is necessary. So, for whatever reason, something inside of me is telling me that I can be better, and I don't have to wait until January 1st to prove it.

The problem: I get lazy, comfortable, and stuck in my routines. I need to be challenged. I need people to check on me and tell me that it's not easy. On top of that, I need to see that despite the struggles, I'm making progress. So, here are a few of my resolutions. I'll list them here and every month or so, I'll write a blog post outlining my progress (or lack thereof). I'm not saying these changes are going to happen overnight... in fact, I'm fairly confident they won't... but let's see how it goes!

  • I'm going to go to sleep by 12:30pm each week night. I have a terrible habit of sitting in front of the TV and being too lazy to move into my room. NOT OKAY. I like to think that I get a lot accomplished in a typical day. Now, imagine if I had more energy and more than 4-5 hours of sleep each night. I'd be like Superwoman. Total badass. (but please ignore the fact that I'm posting this blog post so late at night... baby steps, people!)
  • I'm going to leave work in the office. This one's tricky, because I can never completely leave my work in the office. However, stress is contagious and I do think that a lot of the stress I feel from work is psychological. More sleep means more energy, which means higher productivity, which means having a life outside of work. BAM.
  • I'm going to seriously work at learning the guitar. I've had a guitar since high school and I still can't play it. WTF is up with that?! Guitar is something that I've been passionate about learning for a long time and for whatever reason, I just haven't taken the necessary steps. Well, believe it or not, I've already started working on this resolution! I have a weekly guitar lesson with my fabulous co-workers (shout-out to Claudia and Frank!). Besides that, I plan to practice on my own at least once per week. Maybe I'll even post some videos!
  • I'm going to go to the gym. This one may take a little longer, since I'm waiting on a few things before I can choose a gym to join. I went in college and I see no reason why I shouldn't be going now.
  • I'm going to be more organized. I'm going to work on keeping my room and apartment relatively clean. I'm going to work on organizing my emails. I'm going to work on keeping a calendar. I'm going to unsubscribe to all those stupid emails I get but never read. For those of you who have emailed amy@waitingforatable.com... one of these days, I'm going to start reading your messages (and I apologize for slacking).
  • I'm going to blog once per week... and guess what? Blog day is going in my new calendar! I really love blogging, but I haven't really had the time or energy to keep up. To my blog: I'm sorry for neglecting you and I'm going to be better! (p.s. I can't believe I've only written about TWO things that grind my gears...)
  • I'm going to wear makeup to work. Okay, so I got comfortable. It's gotten to the point where most days, I just throw on some eyeliner and walk out the door. That's not cool at all. The truth is, I DO care, and I think I should start showing it. When you look better, you feel better, so let's give it a shot!
Okay, so now it's official... wish me luck!

Do you have any non-New Year's Resolutions? Spill your guts!
