Phil Robertson Quacks, Makes People Un-Happy Happy Happy

For those of you who aren't up to speed on this whole "Phil Robertson" thing (honestly, I'm not sure how you could miss it), I'll give you the Cliff's Notes version: He made some pretty vulgar anti-gay comments in an interview with GQ Magazine, and then followed that up by saying that he's never seen a black person mistreated in pre-civil-rights-era Louisiana, and that they were always happy, happy, happy. Then the internet went crazy, Sarah Palin came to Phil's defense without reading the interview (which only made matters worse, since no one takes Sarah Palin seriously), and A&E suspended Phil from Duck Dynasty. The rest of the Robertson Family said they wouldn't do the show without Phil and now the future of the show is a giant question mark.

I want to start off by saying that I think Phil's comments are narrow-minded, ignorant, and kid of re-duck-ulous. That being said - why is everyone so surprised? There are plenty of people in our country who are Christian, study the Bible, and believe that homosexuality is a sin. Regardless of whether you live your life that way, you'd have to be blind to not see that half of our country does, and I question why anyone would think that this uber religious family from the south would be all about the gays. It's just not realistic.

On that note, thanks to the First Amendment, Phil Robertson not only has the right to have an opinion, but he also has the right to voice it. What he said to GQ was totally within his rights. HOWEVER, our actions have consequences: The internet exploded, fans got angry at Phil, A&E suspended him from the show, etc. - All consequences of his decision. On the flip side of that, A&E has every right to suspend him from Duck Dynasty - but losing viewership, fans, and the rest of the cast are consequences of THAT decision. It seems that the real problem here is the lack of responsibility.

So now the big question is - what happens to Duck Dynasty? I predict... nothing. Phil Robertson will not be suspended from the show because without him, there would be no show, and we all know that Duck Dynasty is biggest thing A&E has going on right now. People will stop caring about this after New Year's and everything will proceed as usual. Makes me wonder if this was really even worth getting upset about in the first place...
